Buffer Up!
Spring is
definitely here. What a treat to hear birds and insects
serenading. That means it's once again time to register our
buffer zones--let's try to keep hearing those sounds this year.
You can mail, fax or e-mail your
registration, you can sign up at one of CROW's
buffer-up boards or
pick up a registration form to mail (at all Vita Health stores, many
organic food & other locations,
and
all library branches) or you can register on-line directly from the
Insect Control Branch website's new buffer
zone registration
page. Note that they acknowledged our
request to stop referring to us as anti-pesticide registrants.
Language is key to changing public perception so this is an important
improvement.
Remember to provide your mailing address and your phone number if you
wish to be notified in advance of applications in your area.

Thanks!!!
Concerned Residents of Winnipeg
express a huge thank you to all presenters, participants and supporters
of the
Earth
Day Forum
Pesticides
in Children!
held Saturday,
April 22, 2006
at the Bulman
Centre, University of Winnipeg
If you were unable
to attend,
have a look at the agenda
for links to the
speakers bio's.
Stay tuned for video
presentations of the proceedings coming soon.
Events
like this would not be possible without the generous support of many
local businesses offering organic and natural goods and services.
Please let them know you appreciate it by supporting them generously,
too.
Please
support our generous sponsors.

Human Rights
You may also wish to indicate if you're registering because of a health
issue. This may aid future claims to the Manitoba Human Rights
commission. By the way, we're still waiting for the HRC's
response to our complaints, check them out (and more!) on our presentations
page.

Thanks very
much to Pat Martin, Member of Parliament (Winnipeg Centre) for
presenting his private member's bill at the Earth Day forum. It's
very disappointing that the bill was subsequently defeated. Click
for a summary of the bill and to see
how your MP voted, and
perhaps you'd like to send either a beef or a bouquet (organic ones, of
course!).

Monsanto wants to
control the
world's food.
Now
they think they've invented the pig.
We
say, when pigs fly, Monsanto.

Happy
Planet Productions wants us to laugh our way out of poisoning
ourselves with malathion. Check out their website to learn more
about the upcoming event Attack of
the Killer Mosquitoes, coming up on June 23 at Pantages
Theatre. See you there!

You may want
to know how CROW and it's big sister organization, the
CCHE (Canadian Coalition for Health & Environment) work on your
behalf. Here are 2 campaigns we have each recently endorsed.
CROW signed on to this letter
from the Water Caucus sent to Premier Doer and all members of the
legislature asking them to protect
our water.
The CCHE has recently signed on to this declaration against Atlantica,
a movement to consolidate parts of Eastern Canada into an economic
corrider with the US. Part of this mandate is to further align
our chemical regulations with the US.
Let's not forget that "western premiers" are
discussing similar initiatives right now in Gimli, with US and Mexican
leaders. Scary stuff.

CROW staff are enjoying getting settled
into our new office space at St. Norbert Arts Centre. Please call
our new phone number 222-CROW (2769) to arrange a visit. Come and
see our resource library which we will soon have posted online.
We are also busy filling up our calendars with events to attend with
the CROW display. Call if you'd like us to make a presentation to
your group or bring our display to your community function.
Volunteers are
welcome. Please let us know if you're interested in
joining the buffer-up campaign, making phone calls, or if there's
anything else you'd like to offer to help CROW achieve its goals.
Another way to help is to purchase a membership for $10 a year.
You'll find the membership form here. Thanks for supporting our
efforts to reduce pesticide use in Manitoba. |

Green Thumb?
You may want to
check out
some organic urban permaculture settings such as the St. Norbert Arts
Centre or the Wiens family farm, or call Ron and Lillian (269-6532)
to
see how pet chickens can be a source of both pleasure and food security. |
The Manitoba Eco-Network will soon
have the schedule for their organic lawn
care workshops posted on their website, along with lots of
great tips and check also the Compost
Action Project
of RCM for their basic composting workshops. Learn how to have a
healthy lawn without using harmful chemicals
like pesticides and fertilizers. |
