Thu 12 Jan 2006 Summerside Journal Pioneer Drinkable water and breathable air a right: Green Party The Green Party of Canada would amend the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to enshrine the right of future generations to drinkable water and breathable air, says Green Party environment critic and Malpeque candidate Sharon Labchuk. "Access to unpolluted air and water are basic human rights and it's time government recognizes it has a responsibility to stop catering to polluters," said Labchuk in a news release. "Industry and government accept that a certain number of people will be harmed, even killed, by industrial pollution. To them, this is just the cost of doing business. The Green Party says this cost is too high and innocent bystanders should not be the ones to pay the price." Labchuk points to fungicides sprayed in area potato fields as a concern for the party. She noted fungicides sprayed on potatoes account for about 80 per cent of all pesticides used on P.E.I. Labchuk said, "The polluters must pay for damages but, more importantly, we need to stop pollution before it happens." The Green Party supports organic agriculture as the best option for food production in Canada and the only way to end pesticide contamination of air and drinking water. |
