DURSBAN CONTINUES TO BE WINNIPEG'S
KILLER OF CHOICE

Here is an excerpt from Councillor Gerbasi's e-mail update on the 2007 Operating Budget

"Executive Policy Committee (EPC) has now tabled their final draft of the 2007 operating
budget.  The budget debate will be on Tuesday March 20th at 9:30 AM at city hall.

DURSBAN INACTION WILL CONTINUE FOR NOW
EPC did not take action on the issue of the city's continued use of the chemical Dursban for 68% of the larviciding of mosquitoes.  Council had approved a strategy in 2005 to spend 1.5 million in 2007 to switch to
a biological larvicide; as Dursban is expected to be banned by the Federal authorities in the next few years.

The positive is that the issue has at least been brought to everyone's attention and EPC knows that if we wish to truly claim to be a "green" city, we need to deal with these kind of issues."

About Dursban:

Prenatal exposure to the pesticide chlorpyrifos is associated with developmental delays in children and attention deficit hyperactivity problems. The proportion of New York City 3-yr olds showing delayed development was five times greater in the higher exposure group.   PEDIATRICS (doi:10.1542/peds.2006-0338)
