Whiteman deserves praise

Re: Spray and be sued: protester by Natalie Pona and Law loses its sting: Anti-fogger must be prosecuted, not forgiven by Tom Brodbeck (Oct. 26).

Glenda Whiteman, a member of the Wolseley-based Concerned Residents of Winnipeg (CROW), should be congratulated, rather than punished, for her opposition to the misguided City of Winnipeg decision to spray the highly toxic malathion, which is not only harmful to humans but also destroys beneficial organisms that control West Nile virus; hence its use is not only irresponsible but also counter-productive.

In other jurisdictions use of larvicides in streams and ditches, away from residential areas, is producing satisfactory results, without endangering people and beneficial organisms.

In zeroing on what he perceives as misconduct on the part of Ms. Whiteman, Mr. Brodbeck appears to be completely misinformed as to what is at stake and who is truly to blame.

Citizens should have the right to protect their own health as well as the health of those who are the most vulnerable: young children and people with environmental sensitivities.

(Editorial Comment: Then Whiteman shouldn't have cut a deal.)
