Letter to The Editor re Waverley West back to What's New
The Editor January 12, 2004 Dear sir, Perhaps you have heard that our world is threatened by Climate Change, Terrorism, Pollution, etc. etc. but just where do the solutions lie to these problems-threats? Just how are any of us here in Winnipeg going to make a difference to these World Crises? Problems are often solved by improving ones perspective and through individual (local) action. If we Winnipeggers look at Waverley West with a World perspective that includes disappearing farmland, environmental loading, pollution, and lifestyles that consume at a rate infinitely higher than other cultures, we cannot continue allowing Waverley West or any other obscenely counter-productive project to continue. On every issue, from paving of prime agricultural land to exacerbating existing infrastructure crises in our own city, Waverley West is nothing more than a continuation of the ignorant over-consumption and desecration of our world that North America led throughout the last century. Our politicians and leaders of the past were not aware of the limits to so-called progress that are now perfectly clear to any informed citizen. Our politicians and leaders today have no excuse for ignorance or myopic policies that will only further undermine our City - Society -World. Shane Nestruck |
