New
Pesticides Blog
On January 16th, 2007 Beyond Pesticides converted its Daily News
feature into a
Blog (located at http://www.beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog),
enabling readers to post additional relevant information that will
further
inform or give perspective to the issue(s) being discussed. Daily News
is a
service of Beyond Pesticides that is intended to keep activists,
academicians, policy makers, the health care community, and pest
managers
informed on key issues and actions that are ongoing and important to
the
protection of public health and the environment. Daily News is intended
to
provide a tool for action as we seek to effect a shift in policies,
practices and products to safeguard the health of people and the
environment.
This is how our blog works. When you click on "More" at the end the
Daily
News story on Beyond Pesticides homepage
http://www.beyondpesticides.org,
a new
window will appear with the complete story. To post a comment, click on
the
"X Comments" link at the bottom of the story (if you're the first
person to
comment, the link will read "No Comments." Content that you post will
remain on the website as a part of the historical record on that issue.
Please note that Beyond Pesticides will monitor blog entries to ensure
that
they do not violate principles of accepted Internet standards. We
encourage
your thoughts, suggestions and insights, but cannot permit profanity or
any
material that is not related to the Daily News story.
If you have a topic or story that you would like to see covered as a
Daily

June 14--AFA moves to
medium
The City of
Winnipeg Insect Control Department announced today the debut of this
year's door-to-door public education campaign TEAAM (Targeted
Environmental Action Against Mosquitoes) which has been expanded this
year to include industrial and commercial sites (terrific--keep it
up!). Sadly, they also announced that they have increased the
mosquito index (the AFA guidelines) to a medium risk. See their website for
more information, and to register your buffer zone (or
click here for other ways to register).
Moving to a medium AFA includes the commencement of "barrier
treatments" or daytime adulticiding in non-residential areas such as parks and other vegetative areas with a
synthetic pyrethroid sold commercially as Permanone. Click on About Pesticides and scroll down to
About Pyrethroids for more information. To officially register
your objection to the use of pyrethroids (and other chemicals such as

New Pesticide subcommittee set up at city hall
At a meeting of Protection and
Community Services on June 12, 2006, a new-subcommittee was struck to look at
Pesticide Reduction. The Committee will be chaired by Councillor
Harvey Smith and includes Councillor
Donald Benham. The following motion was passed unanimously:
That we establish a non-essential
pesticide reduction subcommittee as there is growing evidence that pesticides
are associated with both acute and chronic health effects not only in
workers who apply them, but also among community residents who are exposed
at home and in schools,
businesses, workplaces,
parks and other public places.
A. To
consult with Winnipeggers on strategies for reducing non-essential pesticide use
B. To
identify and consult with key stakeholders
C. To
review policies and programs of other Canadian jurisdictions with respect to reducing
non-essential
pesticide use.
This is a similar approach to how the
smoking ban was dealt with a few years ago, led by Councillor Mark
Lubosch. The process allowed for a lot of public input, the group brought
forward recommendations and eventually council agreed to move forward
with the ban on smoking.

EPA
ADMINISTRATORS
PRESSURE STAFF TO OVERLOOK PESTICIDES
EDITOR'S NOTE: If you think things are better in Canada,
read Hon. Tony Clement Comments on PMRA Leak,
June 7, 2006
Government
scientists are blowing the whistle on the Environmental Protection
Agency's attempts to allow the continued use of 20 hazardous
organophosphate pesticides. Nine thousand EPA scientists have submitted
a strongly worded letter to the EPA's Administrator, Stephen Johnson,
protesting that "industry pressure" is compromising the "integrity of
the science upon which agency decisions are based." Research indicates
that these specific organophosphate pesticides, similar in composition
to bio-warfare nerve gases, pose serious health threats, especially to
babies in the womb, infants, and children, yet most of them are
contained in common products used by the average consumer. EPA
scientists complain that they are being forced to skip key risk
assessment tests on these dangerous toxins due to pressure from the
chemical industry. This rebellion inside the EPA comes on the heels of
the agency's new controversial regulations that would allow the
intentional dosing of
pregnant women and children with pesticides.

GOOD NEWS : INTERNATIONAL COURT INDICTS DOW & MONSANTO
For over three decades, Dow and Monsanto have denied that
Agent Orange is toxic, thereby avoiding billions of dollars in
financial liabilities resulting from the massive and indiscriminate
spraying of the toxic defoliant during the Vietnam War. In a landmark
lawsuit last month, a Seoul, Korea High Court ruled against Monsanto
and Dow in favor of Korean veterans who fought in the Vietnam War and
have suffered serious health injuries from Agent Orange. The court
ruled there is ample evidence that Monsanto and Dow knew how toxic
Agent Orange was before the corporations dumped 19 million gallons of
the now banned herbicide on Vietnam between 1965 and 1972. The court
said there is conclusive scientific data connecting Agent Orange with
11 types of medical conditions, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma,
Hodgkin's disease, prostate cancer and diabetes. Empowered by the
successful lawsuit, Korean and Vietnamese veterans will rally outside
the White House in April, calling on the U.S. government to assist in
efforts to pay the victims of Agent Orange compensation for medical
costs associated with exposure to the herbicide.

Good News, Bad News
the good news is Europe

the bad news is, we
don't live beside Europe
good
news: The
potential benefits of implementing Europe's new regulatory framework for chemicals, REACH, could amount to
over $2 billion annually in saved health care costs. A conservative lower
limit for the estimate is approximately $200 million. The wide
range reflects many scientific uncertainties and inadequate data. These
should only be seen as indicative values for the potential
benefits of REACH. Read about the impact of REACH
on the environment and human health.
bad
news: The
White House's Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is proposing new
approaches that would apply to many controversial US risk assessments,
placing more emphasis on 'middle' estimates and requiring stronger
cases for low dose exposures. Read US

the ripple effect: Bug City at the
WAG
http://www.wag.mb.ca/whatson/whatson.html
Organized by The Winnipeg Art Gallery
September 21, 2005 to January 8, 2006.
Free public opening at 7:30pm, Wednesday, September 21
This September the Gallery will be
crawling with strange new species of insects. The best thing is, they
don’t bite.
Today, insects are on the public agenda. We live in a time of growing
public concern over viruses like West Nile, and the problem chemicals
used to control the mosquitoes that spread such illnesses. Moreover,
recent political events around bug control strategies make Winnipeg a
privileged site for the investigation of the challenges and
opportunities of problem insect species.
Bug City is a timely exhibition. It explains the increasingly important
place of insects in contemporary artistic practices, connecting it with
pressing social and political issues around urban ecology and public
health. Bug City touches everyone.

You may have
heard about the silly debate
over buffer zones resurfacing. Council voted today (May 18th,
2005) 13 - 2 to file that idea for good! Among other
comments,
some reasons for putting that motion to rest included:
- many substances formerly approved by PMRA have
been proven toxic
- the precautions advised accompanying Malathion
use are frightening
- buffer zones allow for a a balance of the rights
of all citizens
- few other cities in Canada still fog
- supporting this clause supports the status quo
- this is a policy that seems to be working
- it's fine if people choose the option of being
pesticide-free
- people who complain their neighbour has a buffer
can be reassured by explaining that the chemicals will drift anyway
- concerns are health-related
- the council does not have the authority to
abolish buffer zones
- it's best to let a sleeping dog lie
