"Here I Stand"
Tune-Up (workshop) for the
Canadian Lutheran Youth Gathering
August 18, 2006   Winnipeg, Canada

west--the calling (healing)

-very sick one year ago, and this past year has been a healing journey (Detox Day, Dec '05, and the Earth Day Forum, April 06)
-being very called to Herbology, native teachings, and Aboriginal Justice issues (ie Grassy Narrows); essentially, the care of Mother Earth
-anxious to get to my property in the Interlake where I will cultivate organic gardens, save (non genetically engineered) seed, compost, learn to wildcraft and prepare medicines (like my ancestors), and learn to conserve and give back (energy) rather than consume (voluntary simplicity)
north--the future
where will you stand?

-to effect change, your stand does not have to be anywhere near as extreme as mine.  ("No business cards, thanks!")
-Where do you see yourself standing?  What social justice issue or environmental issue calls you to decide, "This is my limit.  I draw the line here.  I will learn as much as I can about this issue, and then be 'active' about changing it because it needs to be done."
-think-pair-share

                                                                          Here I Stand--

                                                                        Where Will You?

south--the action (one dead crow)
-Knock, Knock!  They're going to spray our neighbourhood!!  Come protest! (July 2002)
-one dead crow = a health emergency
-where's the big sister organization to save us from this madness?  Nowhere.  Does not exist in Manitoba--so we did it ourselves
-protests in streets, at city compounds, at City Hall, sit-ins, street theatre at legislature, events, media & student interviews, fippas, presentations to governments and others, incorporation, articles, display...
-birth of activism = understanding of MCS
-most well-known for getting arrested (July 20, 2004) and being willing to do it again (July 20, 2005)  This  inspires others to take their own stands
-conflict is banging up against people's edges--it's an opportunity for education
-courage is not the absence of fear, it's doing things anyway (videoclip I wanted to show)
-behind the scenes work = change,  2 examples:
1) Manitoba Human Rights Commission Complaints 260 and 273 (March 2006) and
2) Defence of Civil Disobedience (August 17, 2005)
-don't trust the media (video clip--The Panel)
-education is key to changing people's opinions
east--the perspective (the beginning)
-introductions
-ordinary Joe person--nobody special
-very busy life, career, mom, sincere admiration
for activists out there; head in the sands of life:
"if something important enough happens,
someone will tell me"
--Nanny to Granny in six months-
age 39, 6 months as "Nanny" on Carribean island; no epiphany there, but home to become "Granny" @ 40 (photo  Happy 40th!)
-birth of grandchildren=birth of activism
-I couldn't not do anything anymore
-ask & listen (pray & duck)
